Linguist. He was born on May 14, 1936 in Hekimhan / Malatya. He has completed his primary and secondary education in Kadirli. He graduated from Adana Boys’ High School (1955) and studied at French Philology Department, Faculty of Literature, and Istanbul University for one year. He transferred to the Department of Turkish Language and Literature of the same faculty with TDK Scholarship. He has received the certificates of Arabic Language and Literature, Persian Language and Literature and Latin Language and Literature certificates and completed his higher education (1960). He worked as a Term branch expert in Turkish Linguistic Institution (1960-1962). He became an assistant at Ankara University, DTCF, Department of Turkish Language and Literature Professorship of Old Turkish Dialects. He has completed his doctoral studies in 1965 with the thesis named “Behçetü’l-Hada’ik fî Mev’izeti’l Hala’ik (Giriş, Gramer İncelemesi, Dizin)”. In the same year, he became the Turkish lecturer at Hamburg University, Minor Asia History, Cultures and Languages Institute, where he taught courses such as Anatolian Dialects and Intermediate Turkish. In 1967, he returned back to Turkey; and in 1969, he returned to his job at the faculty. He became an associate professor in 1973 with his thesis named “Ali Şir Nevayi: Lisanü’t-Tayr” and he became a professor in 1983. He worked at the ordering-Scanning Branch of TDK and as the President of Dictionary Branch, and in Konya Selçuk University (1977-1982) and Balıkesir Necatibey Faculty of Education (1982-1982). In 1992, he established the Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures Department at AU Languages, History and geography Faculty and worked as the department head and subdivision head of DTCK Old Turkish Language. He is a member of Linguistic Association.

He worked as an editor of Türk Dilleri Araştırmaları Yıllığı (1995, 1996 and 1997) with a committee. He was one of the editors of Ömer Asım Aksoy Armağanı (1978). In 1993, he received the International Cengiz Aytmatov Union award.
