Linguist (b. January 1939, Uşak -d. 11 June 2022, Ankara).
He attended various primary schools due to his father’s job as a civil servant.
He attended Ahmet Midhat Efendi primary school (1951), Uşak High School (1959)
and graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Literature, Department of
Turkish Language and Literature (1963). He worked as a substitute teacher in
village schools in Uşak for a while and as a scientific specialist at the
Turkish Culture Research Institute (1963-70, 1972-73). Later he became an
assistant in the Faculty of Literature (1974). In 1976 he attended Texas Tech
University as a guest student and returned to Faculty of Literature one year
later. He became an associate professor in 1980 and started work at Fırat
University, Faculty of Science and Literature. There he served as the chairman
of Department of Turkish Language and Literature and as the director of the
Institute of Social Science (1985-89). He started to work at Erciyes University
in 1989 when he became a professor. There he served as assistant and deputy to
the rector (1990-92). He still serves as the chairman of the Department of
Turkish Language and Literature at the same university.
Apart from university magazines, his articles have also
been published in the magazines Devlet,
İmage, Kültür ve Sanat, Millî Folklor, Millî Eğitim ve Kültür, Tarla, Töre,
Türk Dili, Yeni Düşünce, Yeni Forum and Türk Kültürü. He prepared
articles for TDV İslam
Ansiklopedisi (The Turkish
Foundation for Religious Affairs’ Encyclopedia of Islam) and KB İslam Ansiklopedisi (Islamic Encyclopedia of the
Ministry of Culture). He has received many awards such as the Folklore Research
Institution İhsan Hınçer Service to Turkish Folklore Award in 1986, the Writers
Union of Turkey Service to the Turkish Language Award and the International
Spiritual Association Honor Award in 2000. Some of his poems have been set to
music. He is a member of the Turkish Language Association, the Turkish Culture
Research Institute, the Writers Union of Turkey and the Professional
Association of Scientific and Literary Work Owners of Turkey.
